A few years ago, on an unseasonably warm day in November, we had a weekend brunch on the back deck, and somehow this pan was left behind. There was a light rain that evening, but then the temperature dropped after sunset, trimming the world in glittering ice.
I woke in the dead of night, drawn to my window by the sparkling moon. In the midst of wrapping my shoulders in a shawl, I saw them: three tiny fairies, using my griddle as a skating rink.
I froze in place, so as not to frighten them away, and I must have stood there for ten minutes or more, perfectly still, watching as they leaped and twirled and laughed beneath the stars.
Did I dream it? Perhaps. But I leave the griddle out every night in November, just in case.
