As the Earth passes through the winter solstice, the darkest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, we are also in the season of the celebration of light. So we are asked to understand what it means to be in the dark, and to celebrate the light we share with each other and the world. It is precisely the conjunction of the long, dark winter nights with the light we each have within ourselves that brings a magic to this season.
Another “great conjunction” is happening in the night sky. Jupiter and Saturn are visibly the closest they’ve been to us in roughly 800 years. The conjunction is on the threshold of winter’s darkness giving way to coming spring. Thresholds are places of possibility.
This is the time for possibility to reign. The time for each of us to feel the possibility for what is coming. The time to look toward the return of the light and the possibility of spring. This is a season of hope and a season of love.
May we feel our light in the dark, look to the sky, to the conjunction of what has been and what is possible. As we feed ourselves and each other through this season, may we nourish the hope for the returning light and peace and good health for us all.
